How we test

Our testing team orders each featured product through a shopping agent, pays the listed price plus handling and shipping, and records the date of payment and the date of arrival. Parcels are opened on camera in the Portland room.

  • Material: fabric weight to the gram, coated-fabric thickness at five points with a dial caliper, stitch density per inch on load-bearing seams, hardware finish under a light box.
  • Construction: zip cycling, buckle pull, strap-anchor tug, seam-gauge check on taped joints.
  • Fit and carry: three body types, loaded to stated capacity with sandbags, one week of ordinary commuting.
  • Agent experience: quoted versus actual weight, delivery window, packaging condition, paperwork, returns path.
  • Comparison: every sheet carries a table comparing the product to two or three alternatives we handled in the same quarter.

Scores are five-point, written as X / 5. Hands-on scores for gear we ordered and tested run from 4.0 to 5.0. A 4 means good with a named compromise; a 5 means we could not find a fault that mattered at the price.
