Celine All-Over Print Green Shorts: A Six-Wash Ledger, a White Control Cloth and the Colorfast Claim
Six washes with a white cotton control cloth stitched into every load put the colorfast claim on record. The green monogram-style print held its ground; the bare drawstring ends did not.

Colorfastness is the easiest claim on a five-dollar pair of shorts to write and the hardest one to see. You cannot judge it from a photograph, and a single wash tells you almost nothing. So when the listing for these Celine all-over print shorts in green promised breathable, wrinkle-free, stain-resistant and colorfast polyester, our testing team picked the claim with a measurable outcome and built a ledger around it.
We ordered the green pair in size L through the same agent route readers use, paying $5.22 against a $5.96 list, and logged the parcel on arrival: SKU 7717465313, 176 g folded, a low-rise drawstring waist, a loose straight leg, and a repeating light monogram-style motif over a solid green ground. The listing also offers apricot and black in sizes M through 5XL, all in the same patterned design.
How the six-wash ledger was built
Each load carried a 15 cm square of plain white cotton poplin, sewn into a mesh bag and washed alongside the shorts. That control cloth is the whole point of the exercise: if dye leaves the garment, the white square is where it shows up first. We washed at 30 °C and 40 °C, included one six-hour soak, used a mild detergent in four cycles and none in one, and line-dried the shorts in shade except for the final cycle, which sat in direct Portland sun for five hours. Between cycles we photographed the print face at the same three points: the left hem, the waistband gathering and the centre-front panel.
| Cycle | Water and time | Control cloth | Print face |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 30 °C, 40 min, mild detergent | No visible transfer | Unchanged |
| 2 | 30 °C, 6 h soak, mild detergent | Faint green cast at one fold line, grey-scale 4 | Crisp, no loss of definition |
| 3 | 40 °C, standard cycle | Grey-scale 4 at the contact edge | Slight softening at the hem repeat |
| 4 | 30 °C, no detergent | Negligible | Unchanged |
| 5 | 40 °C, standard cycle | Grey-scale 4 | Unchanged |
| 6 | 30 °C, five hours direct sun to dry | No transfer | Sun-facing leg read about half a shade lighter |
That is a respectable result for polyester at this price. Four on the grey scale is not perfection, but it is a garment you can wash with light colours without a separate load, which is more than we expected to write. The wash that mattered was the soak: a six-hour dwell is where cheap prints usually surrender, and this one only marked the control at a single fold line.
What the white cloth could not tell us
Dye transfer is one failure mode. Abrasion is the other, and the control cloth is blind to it. So we ran twenty dry strokes and ten wet strokes of white cotton across the print at the hem, then looked at the reverse face under a light box. The reverse showed a pale shadow of the motif but no strike-through, and the dry rub lifted almost nothing. The wet rub lifted a trace onto the cotton — visible, but not enough to mark a white tee in a day of wear.
The wear point we did not like is the drawstring. The cord ends ship bare, with no aglets and no heat-sealed tip, and by the third wash both ends had opened into a 3 mm fray that kept growing. Left alone it will eventually knot the channel. We trimmed and sealed ours with a lighter; if you do not own a lighter, budget for re-lacing.
Shrinkage, seams and the loose cut
- Flat length: 46.0 cm before washing, 44.9 cm after six cycles, a 1.1 cm loss.
- Flat waist, relaxed: 38.0 cm settling to 37.4 cm; the drawstring still cinched comfortably on a 78 cm waist and a 92 cm waist in our fit checks.
- Leg opening: 30 cm circumference down to 29.6 cm, which kept the straight-leg line intact.
- Every figure sits inside the listing's stated 1–2 cm tolerance, so the sizing note is honest even though no flat measurements are published.
The low rise is the thing to think about. With no belt loops and a drawstring closure, the waist sits below the natural line and stays there through a walk, a sit and a crouch. Two of us wore it for a week of ordinary commuting without a re-tie. If you want a waistband that holds its shape on its own, this is not that garment — it is a soft, gathered channel that follows the cord you pull.
The wrinkle-free claim split along the same lines as the print. The legs came off the line smooth enough to wear without a press; the hem, where the print layers overlap the stitch line, held two soft creases that needed a hand-smooth. Nothing that survives a folding table, but not a garment that ignores a suitcase either.
The field that still disagrees with the title
One open question survives our testing. The title and the photographs describe an all-over print; the listing's own pattern field reads solid colour. We asked through the app and got a stock reply that did not resolve it. Our green pair is unmistakably printed, so the field appears to be a clerical leftover — but we cannot promise the beige or black option you receive is patterned the same way, or that a later batch matches ours. Before ordering, ask the seller for a photo of the exact colour and size you are buying and confirm the pattern in writing.
Set against that, the practical case is simple: a 176 g polyester short that survived six washes with its green print legible and its control cloth nearly clean, for $5.22 before agent fees and freight. Confirm the print, measure your waist rather than trusting the size letter, and seal the cord ends when the parcel lands.
What works
- Print held colour through six washes, greyscale 4 at worst
- Light 176 g, line-dried smooth on the legs
- Drawstring cinches comfortably on 78 cm and 92 cm waists
Watch-outs
- Pattern field reads solid while the title and photos show print
- Cord ends have no aglets and frayed 3 mm by the third wash
- Low-rise drawstring waist with no belt loops or flat measurements
