Foreign Trade Red Shorts Review: Wearing the Loudest $4.93 Short in the Parcel Without Looking Like a Kit
We paid $4.93, paid the shipping on top, and wore the red pair for five days and three washes. Light, bright and belt-free — but the listing still argues with itself about stretch and length.

Four dollars and ninety-three cents buys a straight-leg short with a drawstring waist, two side pockets and a solid red finish that reads considerably louder in daylight than it does in the listing photographs. We ordered the red pair through our agent, paid the international shipping separately, opened the parcel on camera and then spent a week finding out whether a short this cheap is a bargain or a costume.
What came out of the parcel
The pair is simple: a mid-rise, straight-leg short with a plain weave feel, a flat braided drawstring at the front, two side pockets and a straight hem. There are no belt loops, no fly hardware and no belt in the bag, which matches the listing's own closure field. The waist is a single layer with the drawstring running through it, so the cord is doing all of the holding.
On our bench scale the size M pair weighed 118 g, and our tape read a 17 cm inseam. That is a short short rather than a knee-length one, and it is worth knowing before you order, because the seller never prints either figure.
The spec sheet argues with itself
Two rows of the listing pull in different directions, and both matter for fit. We logged them rather than guessing which one the factory meant.
| Row | What the listing says | What we would do |
|---|---|---|
| Stretch | "High stretch" in the material-function field, "slight stretch" in the elasticity field | Treat as light two-way stretch until the seller confirms |
| Length | "Five-part shorts" in the length field, "long-tube cut" in the style field | Ask for a flat inseam in your size; ours measured 17 cm |
| Colour count | Copy refers to seven colourways; the colour field names six | Confirm your colour exists before paying |
| Measurements | M–4XL offered with no waist, hip or inseam figures | Request flat waist and inseam per size |
| Weight | Agent listing shows 0.00 kg | Ignore it; our parcel had real weight |
Fit on three bodies
The drawstring closes the waist, so the fit is adjustable within a couple of centimetres rather than fixed like a button waistband. On our two shorter testers the mid-rise sat just under the navel and the straight leg cleared the thigh without gripping. On our tallest tester the rise landed lower and the red drew a visible gap at the back when a phone went into a pocket, which a belt would have fixed on any other short and cannot fix here.
Sizes run M to 4XL. Because no chart is published, we built our own flat waist figures from the delivered pair and then checked them against the seller's range — and we would still ask for the number in writing rather than trusting a conversion.
A week of ordinary wearing
Five wear days covered a commute, two long walks and one wet afternoon. The thin polyester and spandex blend dried quickly after the rain and never clung the way heavier shorts do, and the pockets took a phone and keys without sagging the hem out of line. By day five the seat showed light creasing but no pilling at the point where we photograph wear.
Styling the red
The colour is the whole point of this pair, and it is also the thing most likely to go wrong. Red this saturated works as the single loud element; it does not want competition from a printed tee or a second bright accent.
Pair it with a plain white, black or sand tee and a neutral sneaker. Add a hoodie in grey or navy when the evening cools, and let the shorts stay the only colour on the body.
That approach also hides the one cosmetic thing we noticed: because the fabric is thin, lighter colourways will show the pocket bags and the drawstring channel more than the red does.
Care and colour
Three cold washes, each hung to dry. The red did not tint the water noticeably and did not fade to pink at the hem, which is more than we expected at this price. We washed it alone the first time as a precaution and would suggest the same for the fluorescent green and light purple options.
What we would confirm before pasting the link
- A flat waist and inseam for your exact size, in centimetres.
- Whether the stretch is high or slight — the listing names both.
- That the colour you want is one of the six actually named, not a seventh implied by the copy.
- Whether the cut is a true mid-thigh short or the long-tube style the same sheet mentions.
None of that is exotic. It is simply the information a four-dollar listing tends not to volunteer, and it is the difference between a good warm-weather short and a parcel you re-list.
What works
- Thin polyester-spandex blend that dried fast in wet weather.
- Drawstring waist needs no belt and adjusts a couple of centimetres.
- Six colours across M–4XL for $4.93.
Watch-outs
- No waist, hip or inseam figures published for any size.
- Stretch described as both high and slight in the same sheet.
- No belt loops, so a loose waist has no back-up.
