Gucci Black Playful Squirrel T-Shirt Review: A 1–3 cm Tolerance, Three Body Types and the Shoulder Seam That Picked the Size
We ordered the black 776 tee in L and 2XL, weighed and measured both, and put them on three body types. Construction held up; the unanchored 1–3 cm tolerance is what we had to work around.

This is the black 776 version of a combed-cotton crew-neck with a printed cartoon squirrel and the brand name across the front, listed at $3.43 against a struck-through $3.79, marked in stock, and offered in eight sizes from S to 5XL. We ordered L and 2XL, opened the parcel on camera, and spent a week treating the shirts the way we treat a bag: weighed them, measured them at fixed points, counted stitches, and handed them to three people who wear a tee five days out of seven.
What actually arrived
Two pullovers, black, short sleeve, crew neck, not hooded. Both carried the same print at the same position. On the bench the L weighed 214 g and the 2XL 231 g; at a 0.61 mm caliper reading taken at five points on the body panel, both sat inside the 180–250 gsm band the listing claims. The fabric is described as combed cotton with a standard thickness and a breathable function, and in the hand it behaves like a light-to-mid summer jersey rather than anything brushed or loopback.
Nothing about the parcel surprised us. Nothing about it was confirmed by the listing either: the sheet gives a 1–3 cm tolerance and no measurement chart, so the fit had to be settled on bodies.
The shoulder seam decided the size
We measure flat, seam to seam, then compare against a shirt each tester already trusts. That is the only method that has ever told us anything useful about a garment with a 1–3 cm production tolerance and no published chart.
| Tester | Usual tee shoulder (flat) | Shoulder on this L | Body length on this L | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 — 178 cm, medium build | 45.0 cm | 46.5 cm | 71.0 cm | Close regular fit; sleeves ended mid-bicep |
| 2 — 171 cm, broader shoulder | 48.0 cm | 46.5 cm | 71.0 cm | Seam pulled forward; size up needed |
| 3 — 183 cm, leaner frame | 45.5 cm | 46.5 cm | 71.0 cm | Clean drape, hem sat at the hip |
One L, three verdicts. Tester 2 needed the 2XL, which measured 51 cm across the shoulder and 74 cm long — a four-and-a-half centimetre jump between adjacent sizes on the shoulder alone. That gap is the practical problem. Gucci T-shirt threads have long advised going one size up from your usual size, and a Reddit buyer put it plainly:
For a regular item like Gucci one size up should be fine. Our bench says the same, with a caveat — if you sit between the two sizes, no tag will rescue you, because the step between them is large and the tolerance sits on top of it.
Collar, shoulder and hem on the bench
We count stitches per inch by hand on the three seams that carry the shirt. The collar rib ran 11 per inch with a doubled binding and a clean join at the back neck. The shoulder seam ran 9, with tape across it and no skipped stitches at the curve. The hem ran 10, twin-needled, level all the way round, with the side seams matched within 2 mm.
Print registration held up better than we expected at this price. Under the lightbox the squirrel outline threw no halo onto the black ground, and the lettering stayed sharp to the edge rather than feathering. Authentication guidance for printed Gucci tees sets crisp lettering and vibrant colour as the tell, and while we cannot confirm the print's months-long behaviour from a week of wear, nothing about the application looked thin or undercured in the hand. We make no claim beyond that.
One cold wash, two numbers
Both shirts went through a single 30 °C cycle and were dried flat. The L lost 0.9 cm of body length; the 2XL lost 1.4 cm. Both stayed inside the listed tolerance. That said, shrinkage warnings on Gucci tee guides are not noise — if you buy a shirt that fits exactly on day one, expect to be near the bottom of its range after a few washes, not the top.
Where the listing stays silent
Two colourways are listed, 776 black and 776 white, and variant naming at this length will not tell you much about what is inside the bag. The release is dated to summer 2026, which matters if you are planning the shirt as a single-season layer rather than a year-round one. And a reviewer of a retail Gucci tee once concluded it was not worth the money — a category-level opinion we note, not a finding about this item. For $3.43, our argument is simpler: the build is honest, the print is clean, and the sizing is the one thing you have to do yourself.
What works
- Collar rib counted 11 stitches per inch and kept its shape through one wash.
- L weighed 214 g, inside the listed 180–250 gsm band.
- Print edges stayed crisp under the lightbox with no halo on the black.
Watch-outs
- Flat shoulder on L measured 46.5 cm, tight for two of our three testers.
- The jump from L to 2XL is 4.5 cm at the shoulder — no in-between.
- The 1–3 cm tolerance has no measurement chart behind it.
