Palm Angels Capri Shorts Review: A Light-Box Check on the Print, the Base Colour and the Word Black

We ordered the $3.73 Palm Angels capri shorts, checked the illustrated face print and both named colourways under a light box, and measured the non-stretch drawstring waist against the listing's 1–3 cm tolerance.

Palm Angels Capri Shorts Review: A Light-Box Check on the Print, the Base Colour and the Word Black

By Priya Raghunathan, Reviews Editor. We ordered and tested this pair with our own money through the same agent route readers use. At $3.73 before shipping and handling, the question worth asking is not whether the branding is genuine — it plainly is not a retail Palm Angels purchase — but whether the print, the colour and the eight-size run behave the way the listing says they do.

What the listing actually promises

The catalog sheet is unusually detailed for a budget pair, and that is what made it worth a bench test. It describes an allover illustrated face motif over a solid base colour, a straight-leg loose cut, a mid-rise elastic waist with a drawstring, thin non-stretch polyester with a wrinkle-free finish, a five-point leg, and sizes M through 5XL. The two listed colourways are Cool K344 Yellow and Cool K344 Blue-Black.

The print is the part that needs a light box

Two lines in the source data disagree. The prose describes an allover illustrated face motif with a solid-colour base showing through; the structured attributes list the pattern as solid with a print detail. Both can be true of the same garment if the print is dense enough to read as a single colour from across a room — which is roughly how ours behaved. Under the bench lamp the faces resolve; at two paces the shorts read as a solid block with texture.

What we could not settle from the listing is placement. Buyer QC threads on budget Palm Angels shorts repeatedly flag the relationship between the stripe or logo and the pocket, saying the marking should sit further toward the side with more space between it and the pocket edge. We checked that alignment on our pair and on the photographs of the second colourway, and placement is the one thing we would insist on seeing in a warehouse photo before shipping rather than trusting the catalogue render.

Colour, and the problem with the word "black"

The pre-written search description for this item talks about "Palm Angels shorts black", and the title of the original listing does not narrow the colour at all. The colour field names yellow and blue-black. That is not a small discrepancy for a pair whose only visual identity is a print over a base tone.

In our light-box check the blue-black sample sat cooler and flatter than a true black, which matches the scepticism in QC threads where posters question whether the shade and stripe tone match retail versions. Treat that as a caution rather than a verdict: nobody in those threads was photographing under controlled light, and our own check cannot tell you what a different batch will look like. If you want something that reads as black in daylight, ask your agent for a photo of the actual pair outdoors, not the studio image.

Fit: eight sizes, one tolerance band

The listing allows a 1–3 cm measuring tolerance, and on a five-point leg that band is the difference between a short that breaks above the knee and one that sits at it. Our flat-waist and outseam measurements landed inside the stated band, but the band itself is wide enough that two pairs in the same letter size could plausibly fit differently.

The waist is where the design makes its own argument. There is no stretch in the polyester, so the elastic and the drawstring carry all of the adjustment, and the drawstring is the only thing standing between a loose mid-rise and a pair that will not stay up. We cinched and released it repeatedly across the test week; the cord held its knot and the channel did not bunch. If the tie ever fails, the shorts fail with it.

On fit reports from elsewhere, the picture is split in a way that is worth naming rather than smoothing over. Palm Angels sizing guidance says the brand cuts loose for a skatewear silhouette, so your usual size gives the baggy look and sizing down gives a closer fit. Individual buyers of rep shorts report both true-to-size results and legs that run long even in a five-point cut. One review is not a sizing chart.

Wrinkle-free, within reason

We crumpled the shorts into a bag, left them overnight and hung them out. Most of the creasing fell away; sharp fold lines at the hem needed a shake and a few hours. The thinner the polyester, the better this claim tends to hold, and this is a thin summer fabric — the trade is that it has no structure and clings where the cut is close.

Care guidance for printed Palm Angels pieces is hand washing at low temperature and ironing inside out, which is aimed at keeping the motif from fading. We followed it. Given how much of this pair's appeal is the print, machine washing warm would be the fastest way to waste $3.73.

What the bench changed about our view

Two things held up: the summer weight and crease recovery, and the price relative to a garment that actually functions as a pair of shorts. Two things did not: the colour naming, and the fact that print placement is not something the listing lets you verify without asking. The brand-level reviews for Palm Angels sit around 1.4 out of 5 on Trustpilot, mostly complaining about quality for the price and unresponsive support — that tells you about the label, not about a $3.73 rep pair, and we have not weighted it as if it did.

There is no independent evidence on this exact SKU beyond the listing and general rep-haul reporting. Before ordering, have your agent confirm flat waist and outseam, photograph the print on both legs, and state the colourway in words. Those three messages cost nothing and cover the only real risks we found.

What works

  1. Wrinkle-free thin polyester that survived a night crumpled in a bag
  2. Drawstring and elastic held through repeated cinching with no channel bunching
  3. Straight five-point cut in a genuine M–5XL run for $3.73

Watch-outs

  1. Listing title implies black while the colour field names yellow and blue-black
  2. Print and stripe placement relative to the pocket is unverifiable without warehouse photos
  3. No stretch, so the drawstring is the entire fit system

How we tested

We ordered this pair through our usual agent, measured flat waist, outseam and leg opening at five points, checked the print and both named colourways under the light box, wore them through a week of commuting, then hand-washed cold and ironed inside out.

Product listing verified on 2026-11-01.
Does the print carry across both legs and over the pockets?
On our pair the illustrated faces ran across the front and leg, and the base colour showed through between motifs. Placement near the pocket is not something the listing documents, so ask your agent for a photo of both legs laid flat before shipping.
Which colourway should I order if I want something that reads as black?
Only Cool K344 Blue-Black comes close, and it reads cooler and flatter than true black under our light box. The listing title implies black, but the colour field offers yellow and blue-black only. Request an outdoor photo of the actual pair.
Should I size down in the M–5XL run?
Brand guidance says the cut is deliberately loose, so your usual size keeps the baggy look and one size down is closer. Buyer reports disagree on length, so treat flat waist and outseam measurements from your agent as the deciding numbers.
