Polo Ralph Lauren Multicolor Shorts Collection Review: Stitch Counts, Hem Widths and the Two Seams We Kept Checking

We paid for two size L pairs of a $6.27 printed polyester short and counted stitches, measured hem openings and pulled every seam by hand. The stitching held; the fabric has no give at all.

Polo Ralph Lauren Multicolor Shorts Collection Review: Stitch Counts, Hem Widths and the Two Seams We Kept Checking

A six-dollar short arrives with low expectations attached, and most of our bench time went into one question: is the money saved on fabric or on construction? For this sheet we ordered two pairs in size L, in two different colorways of the multicolor print run, and spent a week measuring the parts that fail first — the side seam, the hem, the drawstring channel and the waistband join.

What arrived

Both pairs came folded in a single clear polybag inside a soft carton, no hangtag and no composition label beyond a small printed care tab. The listing describes thin, non-stretch polyester with an allover 3D print, a straight leg and a drawstring waist, in sizes S through 5XL with a stated 1–2 cm measurement tolerance. That matches what we handled: the fabric is light, dry to the touch and has visible print depth rather than a flat screen surface.

Our size L pair weighed 168 g on the calibrated scale. Thin fabric is not automatically a fault on a beach short, but it changes how the garment behaves at the seams, because there is less material to distribute a pull.

The seam audit

We counted stitches per inch at four points on each pair with a seam gauge and photographed the same three points before and after the week. The overlocked side seams ran at 10–11 stitches per inch and the hem at 11–12 — ordinary numbers for mass-market sportswear, and consistent between the two pairs we opened.

Check pointWhat we measuredReading
Flat waist (relaxed)39.5 cm and 40 cmWithin the stated tolerance
Hem opening, flat26 cm both legs, both pairsStraight, no taper

Two seams earned repeat checks: the waistband join, where the elastic and the drawstring channel meet, and the bar tacks at the side vents. Both survived hand pulls that were firm enough to distort the fabric around them, and neither showed stitch creep after three wash cycles on a cool setting, line dried.

Where the money was saved

The fabric is where the compromises sit. Zero stretch means the waist relies entirely on the elastic and the cord, so a snug fit has to come from the drawstring rather than from the cloth. There is also very little body: hold a panel to the light box and the weave reads open, which is fine for a beach short and less fine if you want a short to hold a shape through a long, hot day.

Print registration was the pleasant surprise. Across the two colorways we opened, the motif ran without a visible break at the side seam and the edges stayed crisp after washing. The listing calls the technique 3D printing; on the bench it produced depth you can feel under a fingertip, though we cannot confirm how it will age past three cycles.

Nothing on these shorts is pretending to be premium. For $6.27 the seams are honest; the fabric is the part you should decide about before you buy.

Sizing and the tolerance band

The 1–2 cm tolerance is the number to plan around. Our two pairs differed by half a centimetre at the flat waist, comfortably inside the band, but that same band can absorb a full size step at this scale. Brand-level guidance describes several Ralph Lauren fit profiles, with Classic-Fit running roughly a size larger and Custom-Fit sitting closer to Asian sizing, so ask the seller which profile this listing follows rather than assuming one. We found no independent buyer feedback for this exact item, so the listing facts and our own measurements are the whole basis of this sheet.

Our advice is unchanged from the bench: request a flat measurement of the waist and hem in your chosen size and colorway before paying, because at 26 cm the hem is already narrow enough that a heavier thigh will notice.

What we would tell a friend

Buy it as a warm-weather, beach-and-errands short and the arithmetic works: the stitching is sound, the print is clean and the size run reaches 5XL. Buy it expecting structure, stretch or a fabric that feels like anything beyond a light polyester, and the $6.27 will feel like the explanation rather than the bargain. Brand-store reviews of Ralph Lauren repeatedly raise fabric quality and sizing complaints; that evidence describes the brand's own store, not this listing, and we note it as context only.

What works

  1. Side seams and hems ran 10–12 stitches per inch and held our hand pulls
  2. Print registration stayed clean at the seam and after three washes
  3. Two size L pairs matched each other within half a centimetre

Watch-outs

  1. No stretch at all — the fit depends entirely on elastic and drawstring
  2. Fabric is thin enough to read open on the light box
  3. 1–2 cm tolerance can hide most of a size step at this scale

How we tested

Two size L pairs, two colorways: flat waist, hem and inseam measured with a seam gauge, stitch density counted at four points, bar tacks and waistband join hand-pulled, three cool wash cycles and line drying, print checked on the D65 light box before and after.

Product listing verified on 2026-10-30.
How does the 1–2 cm tolerance affect sizing?
At this scale it can absorb most of a size step, so ask the seller for flat waist and hem measurements in your size and colorway before paying. Our two size L pairs differed by half a centimetre.
Will the print survive washing?
Our two pairs came through three cool wash cycles and line drying with no visible break at the side seam and no fading we could see on the light box. Beyond three cycles we cannot say.
Is the short suitable for anything beyond the beach?
It works for hot-weather errands. With no stretch and a thin fabric, it will not hold shape through a long active day or substitute for a structured short.
